How the Judges Decide
In the Women’s Bodybuilding division, judges evaluate each athlete’s physique and presentation on multiple aspects. The goal is to find the competitor who best combines muscular development, conditioning, symmetry, and stage presence, while maintaining an athletic and healthy overall look.
Judges compare athletes in rounds (pre-judging and finals) and assess mandatory poses, quarter-turns and presentation elements.

1. muscularity / size
Judges evaluate the amount of muscle mass — the size, fullness and density of the muscles throughout the physique.
They look at major muscle groups: shoulders, arms, chest, back, quads, hamstrings, glutes — assessing if the development is balanced and appropriate for the division. For example, in the IFBB “Women’s Physique” division documentation, front double-biceps pose criteria include upper body development, balance between upper and lower body, muscle separation and fullness.
However: while size matters, the focus is not only on being as massive as possible good size must come with quality, definition and shape.

2. Conditioning: Muscle Definition & Separation
Conditioning refers to how lean, defined and “sharply” the athlete presents. This includes visible muscle separation (the distinction between muscle groups), striations, vascularity where appropriate, and overall muscle texture.
Judges look for clean lines and clarity: clear separation between deltoids and biceps/triceps, quads and hamstrings, lats and obliques.
The athlete’s skin tone, tanning, and the visual effect of lighting also play a role (presentation influences how the conditioning looks on-stage).
Note: Even though conditioning is important, for female bodybuilding the look must also retain aesthetic appeal, not so shredded as to lose femininity and balance. In historical context, the IFBB addressed “symmetry, presentation, separations and muscularity but not to the extreme.”

3. Symmetry, Balance & Proportion
Symmetry: The two sides of the body (right vs left) should match closely; no major imbalances.
Balance: Upper body vs lower body should be in harmony (e.g., strong legs should not be overwhelmingly dominant relative to the torso; shoulders should blend into arms and back and not stand out awkwardly).
Proportion: Each muscle group should relate in size to the others in a way that’s aesthetically pleasing: a well-developed back that doesn’t overpower the legs, or a torso that flows naturally into glutes and thighs.
Judges observe how each muscle group fits in the overall aesthetic silhouette: V-taper from lats to waist, hour-glass curves where appropriate, fullness in glutes and thighs (depending on the division).

4. Presentation & Stage Craft
Posing: Competitors must perform mandatory poses with precision, control and fluidity. The ability to show each muscular group to advantage matters.
- Front double biceps
- Front lat spread
- Side chest
- Back double biceps
- Back lat spread
- Side triceps
- Abdominals & thighs
Comparison rounds and quarter-turns: Athletes will turn to show physique from all angles (front, both sides, back), and judges assess the physique in each pose. The athlete’s ability to show off their strengths while minimising weaknesses is key.
Overall presence: How an athlete carries herself on stage confidence, posture, facial expression, poise, skin tone, suit fit and hair/makeup (these aesthetic elements support the physique). In earlier guidelines the IFBB referenced “healthy appearance, face, makeup, and skin tone
Crafting a routine or flowing through the poses: The finalists will perform individual posing routines which further highlight their presentation.
Attire and grooming: Complying with the federation’s rules regarding suit style, tan, lighting, and no distracting props. Evenness of tan and suitability of presentation enhance the physique’s impact.

5. Overall Impact / “Aesthetic Package”
Beyond each individual element, judges look for the total package: the athlete whose muscles, conditioning, symmetry and presentation combine into the strongest visual impact.
The ideal competitor presents a body that is complete, no glaring weak spots, each pose works, each muscle group contributes, the athlete keeps consistent quality across all areas.
The winner is typically someone who “brings it all”:
great size, excellent conditioning, perfect balance, flawless presentation and the wow factor.
