START WITH THE BASICS
What is female bodybuilding?
Female bodybuilding is the women’s side of bodybuilding competition, built around progressive weight training, nutrition, posing and presentation. Onstage, athletes are compared according to the criteria of their chosen division. The result is not one single ideal physique: Women’s Bodybuilding, Women’s Physique and Figure reward different levels of muscularity, conditioning, shape and presentation.
The sport has a long competitive history and an international community of amateur and professional athletes. At the professional level, IFBB Pro League contests can qualify athletes for major championships. At amateur level, organisations such as the NPC provide routes through which eligible athletes can pursue professional status.
The best way to understand female bodybuilding is to learn the division standards, watch athlete comparisons and follow contests over a full season.
KNOW THE DIFFERENCE
Female bodybuilding divisions explained
The divisions share an emphasis on symmetry, proportion, conditioning and presentation, but they are not interchangeable. This overview helps new fans recognise the main differences. Official criteria can change, so competitors should always consult the current rules of their federation.
Women’s Bodybuilding
The most muscular of these three divisions. Athletes are assessed on developed muscle, balance, symmetry, conditioning, posing and overall presentation.
Women’s Physique
A muscular and athletic division that places strong emphasis on shape, proportion, conditioning, posing flow and a balanced overall look.
Figure
A division centred on an athletic shape, symmetry, proportion, muscle tone and presentation, with less overall muscularity than the divisions above.
| Division | Primary visual emphasis | Presentation |
|---|---|---|
| Women’s Bodybuilding | Maximum developed muscularity with symmetry and conditioning | Mandatory poses, comparisons and individual routine |
| Women’s Physique | Athletic muscularity, shape, proportion and conditioning | Division-specific comparisons and individual routine |
| Figure | Balanced shape, symmetry and moderate muscular development | Quarter turns and polished stage presentation |
HOW CONTESTS ARE DECIDED
How judging works
Muscularity and conditioning
Judges consider the amount and quality of muscular development appropriate to the division, together with definition and contest-day conditioning.
Symmetry and proportion
Body parts are assessed as a complete physique. Balance from front to back and upper to lower body matters more than one standout area.
Posing and presentation
Mandatory poses or quarter turns allow direct comparisons. Control, confidence, transitions and stage presence help present the physique clearly.
Judging is comparative: athletes are assessed against the standard and against the lineup on that day. Lighting, positioning and posing can affect what judges can see, which is why repeated comparisons are important.

Is Figure considered female bodybuilding?
In general conversation, Figure is often grouped within women’s physique sports or the wider female bodybuilding community. In competition, however, Figure is a distinct division with its own criteria, poses and expected level of muscularity.
